Jet Star Roller Coaster after Superstorm Sandy, 2012

Jet Star Roller Coaster, Seaside Heights, N.J.

Hurricane Sandy (also known as Superstorm Sandy) was one of the most costly hurricanes in U.S. history. Damage centered on the Middle Atlantic region, especially coastal New York and New Jersey. This roller coaster plunged into the Atlantic Ocean when the storm destroyed the Casino Pier on the Jersey Shore community of Seaside Heights. Both a tourist attraction and a grim reminder of the storm's destruction, the submerged roller coaster was removed the following spring.
