Charity brief, 1760

Title

Charity brief, 1760

Description

Days after a great fire ravaged the town of Boston in March 1760, Governor Thomas Pownall issued this "brief" which was to be circulated throughout Massachusetts to solicit donations to help those left homeless by the conflagration. Public officials had circulated such charity briefs to solicit aid for victims of calamity in England since at least the sixteenth century; by the eighteenth century the practice had made its way to the colonies of British America.
