On 1 May 1900, an explosion occurred in the winter Quarters coal mine near the town of Scofield, Utah. More than 200 men were killed, making it the the deadliest American mining disaster to date. It was also a major news story, followed closely nationwide.

This newspaper article published in the Idaho Daily Statesman, just two days after the explosion, on 3 May 1900, listed the names of the men who died in the disaster and whose bodies had been recovered.
